Why I Wrote This Book

Hi there! I’m Lori Elliott, and I wrote this book because of my own experience as a beginner gardener. When I first started trying to plant a garden, I had absolutely no idea what I was doing, and I made too many mistakes to count.

But, because of all of those mistakes I made in my first couple of years gardening, I’ve learned a lot about what not to do as well as what you should do to have a healthy and productive garden.

I wrote this book because I want to share what I’ve learned with you so that you can have a successful garden without having to make all the same mistakes that I made.

My main goal in writing this book was to keep things as simple as possible. Gardening can be a pretty complicated topic, so in this book we stick to the simple basics that you need to grow a successful beginner garden.

Is This Book the Right Fit for Me?

This book would be a good fit for you if . . .

  • You’re a beginner with little or no experience and you want simple steps to grow your own vegetable garden.
  • You’re tried gardening before but you haven’t been successful and you’re looking for the missing puzzle pieces to figure out why your garden isn’t working.
  • You have some gardening experience but you want to learn how to take care of your garden organically without using any chemicals.

This book probably isn’t the best fit for you if . . .

  • You’re an experienced gardener already. Most of the information in this book is geared towards beginners and frustrated or struggling gardeners.
  • You want information about using pesticides, herbicides, and other chemicals. Only natural methods are covered in this book, so you won’t find any information about using chemicals in your garden.

FAQ’s

Here are answers to some frequently asked questions:

Q: What type of gardening does this book cover?

A: This book mainly covers vegetable gardening. Herbs are mentioned occasionally, but the focus is on growing organic vegetables. This book does not cover flower gardens.

Q: Will this book still help me even if I don’t have a big yard and only want to plant a small raised bed or container garden?

A: Yes. The tips in this book apply to all types of gardens, whether you have lots of space or whether you just have room for a couple of tomato plants on your patio.

Q: Will I have to spend a lot of money on supplies and equipment to follow the instructions in this book?

A: No. While there are some basic tools and materials you’ll need for gardening (things like a spade for planting and a hose for watering and the cost of seeds and seedlings), my goal with this book was to make it accessible for any gardener even if you’re on a tight budget. The instructions outlined in this book give you options to choose from depending on how much or how little money you want to invest in your garden.

Q: Will following the steps in this book take a lot of work?

A: Yes and no. There’s always some work involved in gardening, so there is some level of effort required if you want to have a successful garden. I’ve always tended to be a bit of a “lazy” gardener myself, though, so I’ve tried to use the least complicated, easiest methods in this book, and I’ve included options for some steps depending on how much time, effort, and/or money you want to invest in your garden.
